
Akachukwu Okechukwu
Company Secretary/Legal Adviser
Akachukwu was called to the Nigerian bar in 2005, having obtained his LLB from the University of Nigeria in 2004, followed by his successful completion of the Nigerian Law School programme.
He began his professional career at the Law Firm of Chris Uche (SAN) where he gained foundational legal practice experience before joining the Bank in 2006 as a Legal Officer, rising through the ranks and building extensive on-the-job experience in Litigations, Legal Drafting & Conveyancing, Corporate Secretariat duties and general legal advisory services. He was appointed the Company Secretary of the Bank in September 2021.
Akachukwu is a Fellow of the Institute of Management Consultant (FIMC) Nigeria and a Certified Management Consultant (CMC). He also holds Associate memberships with the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers (CIS) as well as the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN), where he was awarded the overall best graduate in Nigeria in December 2012. In addition, he is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
Over the years, Akachukwu has amongst other critical functions, played a pivotal role in several milestone legal undertakings within the Bank. These include the Private Placement exercise that led to the Bank’s privatization through divestment of Government ownership; Listing of the Bank on the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX); Rights Issue exercise; Acquisition of Union Homes Savings and Loans Plc as well as securing numerous favorable key Judgments in key litigation matters involving the Bank.
